ABBOTTS ROAD TO REMAIN OPEN, LEVEL CROSSING TO GO

Closing Abbotts Road in Dandenong South to remove the level crossing has been ruled out by the Andrews Labor Government.

Member for Dandenong, Gabrielle Williams, said the decision was a victory for local residents and businesses, who had all advocated for Abbotts Road to remain open.

The Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) took a range of level crossing removal options to the community, including a proposal to close Abbotts Road at the train line and build a new road bridge connecting Remington Drive and Pound Road West.

However, following local consultation, that option has been ruled out and the dangerous and congested level crossing will be removed by a road or rail bridge at Abbotts Road, or by lowering the road or tracks.

Around 400 local residents, businesses and property owners contributed feedback, which included six community information sessions and an industry forum held between February and May.

LXRA has also established a business liaison group to provide ongoing feedback throughout the planning and development stages, particularly in minimising impacts on local traders. The community will have their say on further aspects of the project in coming months, when LXRA commence the second phase of consultation.
