FUNDING BOOST TO TACKLE DISADVANTAGE THROUGH SPORT

An Allan Labor Government backed initiative is giving thousands of young Victorians and those experiencing social isolation the opportunity to turn the tide through sport.

Member for Dandenong, Gabrielle Williams, today joined participants at a Reclink ActiVIC Women and Girls Volleyball session in Eumemmerring to announce a $5 million boost to help ActiVIC sports sessions around the state go to the next level.

Reclink’s ActiVIC provides opportunities for more marginalised communities across Victoria to play the sports they love, close to home and get active and connected to community.

The funding will enable Reclink to provide sport and active recreation programs – from football, netball, and basketball, to yoga, walking, and lawn games for those that haven’t engaged in sport before – in 19 locations across Victoria.

The programs will improve social inclusion, increase confidence, encourage physical activity, boost health, and provide a chance to re-establish community connections while having fun.

ActiVIC is an outstanding example of the power of sport to bring people from all walks of life together to make a difference – on and off the field.

It’s part of the Allan Labor Government’s commitment to increase participation opportunities for all Victorians including people with disability, those that experience social isolation, poor physical health and mental wellbeing, from a low socio-economic background, including newly arrived communities.
